A Burmese pythonResidents of a Northamptonshire housing estate will be a little wary this week as a giant Burmese python continues to evade capture.

Believed to be "several feet long", the slithering escape artist was spotted by a passer-by in Lingswood, Northampton on Tuesday morning.

Having been seen in a wooded area adjacent to a large housing estate, police have advised that anyone who comes across the sizeable snake should call for either the RSPCA or 999 for more expert assistance.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police told The Telegraph: "Police were called today at approximately 9.30am to a reported sighting of what is believed to be a large snake in the undergrowth.

"It is believed the snake may be a green Burmese Python."

Though it is not known as the dangerous type, the Burmese python is one of the six largest snakes in the world, and any new witnesses have been told not to approach it.

The RSPCA is currently on the lookout but the python, which often favours water or trees, has so far evaded their clutches.
