Nurse, Julia Knight, got a nasty shock when she returned from her shift at Glastonbury Hospital in Somerset to be greeted by the horrific sight of about 75 dead and dying starlings lying in her garden. The RSPCA who are investigating the incident have yet to come up with a conclusive reason for the deaths but suspect the birds were fleeing an attack from a bird of prey and swooped too close to the ground.
The birds were found within 12ft of one another in Mrs Knight's garden. RSPCA animal welfare officer Alison Sparkes who was called by police, discovered that most of the birds had broken beaks, broken legs and wings and abdominal injuries suggesting impact, but were otherwise in a healthy condition.
Five of the birds were still alive but had to be taken to the RSPCA's West Hatch wildlife centre in Taunton but had to be put down because of their injuries.
Neighbours who witnessed the incident said that the birds appeared to fall out of the sky. Mrs Knight said: "One of my neighbours said they literally seemed to just fall out of the sky. About 70 were dead straight away. She said it was like something out of a horror film. It was absolutely terrifying. The sky was raining starlings."
