We weren't surprised to read that eight out of 10 women would rather have surgery than lose weight through diet and exercise (we can see the appeal of having it sucked out too) - but we're wondering why Welsh women are quicker to go under the knife than those living in other parts of the UK.

Dean Boyce, a consultant plastic surgeon who works in Swansea and Cardiff, said he was intrigued by the findings too: "I have no idea why women in Wales are so keen on cosmetic surgery – I don't think it's because they are worse-looking," he said.

"Maybe they are more open-minded about the idea, or more informed about it, or perhaps there is more advertising here than in other parts of the UK."

At the other extreme, women living in the East Midlands were least likely to have had cosmetic surgery.

No matter where women live, there's one procedure that always comes out on top - breast surgery. Women are more likely to have their boobs done (either enlargement or reduction) than any other part of their body.

Welsh ladies also seemed keen for their menfolk to improve their looks, with 23 per cent surveyed saying they would urge their partner to have liposuction if he developed man boobs. So watch out fellas of Wales!

The survey by OnePoll was commissioned by Safer Cosmetic Surgery, a website set up by surgeons who sign up to common safety standards.
